TE-831 Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology - John Wargo
Learning outside of the box; this is the best way to describe Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology. This course allows you to open new gateways to academic learning through the use of game technology, online multimedia, and .com resources. It demonstrates that quality learning isn’t limited to a chalkboard and a lecturer. It can happen anywhere where learning is welcome, where teachers can become students, and where the pen is but one tool in educations extensive quiver. TE-861A Teaching Science for Understanding - Alicia Alonzo “Scientific Understanding” is an essential tool in our ever changing society, but it’s a tool that few of us are proficient, or even familiar with. Teaching Science for Understanding takes a deeper look at the idea behind “Scientific Understanding” and assesses the components that set the stage for the building blocks behind this learning idea. For many of us this idea originated with our elementary academic learning, and it is from that very point that this class picks up. The primary focus of this elementary learning deals directly with the newly implemented Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Through this class I had the opportunity to actively engage in every attribute of the NGSS and address the impending question of whether its implementation is the answer to achieving the basis of true “Scientific Understanding”. |

CEP-815 Technology and Leadership - Dr. Leigh Wolf
Life, technology, and the pursuit of learning. Technology and Leadership is the symbiotic union of modern technology and the principles of lifelong learning. As technology evolves many of us evolve along with it; accommodating these new practices through their integration into our daily lives. This course teaches us how to amalgamate the learning goals of our teaching through the utilization of these ever changing innovations, and find ways to cater these technologies to diverse demographics. EAD-860 Concepts of a Learning Society - Steven Weiland Concepts of a Learning Society refers to a utopian ideal of a world where knowledge is currency, and the wealthiest civilizations are those where learning flows through the streets like an ancient mountain stream. This class opened my eyes to educational possibilities and opportunities historically, currently, and hopefully one day in the near future, freely available to the general public. It embodies the core principles of self driven lifelong learning, and shows us that knowledge is not limited to four walls of an institution, but it is the very air we breathe, the experiences we encounter, and the life we live. ED-800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry - Steven Weiland Concepts of Educational Inquiry asks the age old question of “education: what, where, why, and how?” This course prompts you to dissect the very concept of education and delve into every catacomb within its depths. Many of us limit the idea of “education” to the core concept of our academic careers; this class teaches you otherwise. Through the looking glass of educational history, societal differences, socioeconomic standings, cultural constraints, and administrative limitations; Concepts of Educational Inquiry provides you with the opportunity to find the true meanings of education within this world, and within yourself. TE-861B Inquiry, Nature of Science, and Science Teaching - Sarah Stapleton As part of the National Science Education Standards, Inquiry, Nature of Science is a benchmark program that focuses on the process of scientific investigation and inquiry based learning within the scientific discipline. While many of us are familiar with the “scientific process” learned through our secondary and post-secondary years in education, this course digs deeper into the core of this idea and demonstrates its use past the traditional academic scope and into the professional world. Exposure to institutional methods of alternative educational tools for self-motivated, inquiry based academic learning, and professional methodologies of scientific validation allow you to provide your students with a scientific vision that extends beyond the classroom. CEP-800 Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings - Dr. Cary Roseth Learning is an individual process that is affected by every aspect of life around us and within us. Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings looks at the differences between each of our lives that change how, why, and what we learn. How can two children sitting next to each other in the same class, listen to the same lesson, and separately learn entirely different material in decidedly different ways? This class opens your eyes to the influences of learning that we can’t see; our family structure, our cultural differences, our internal method of processing information, and the personal effects of those we come in contact with. It’s why we learn what we learn. TE-818 Curriculum in its Social Context - Dr. Matt Ferkany How would you define a curriculum, I mean the real meat and potato’s of curriculum development; the curriculum of curriculum? Curriculum in its Social Context attempts to do just that; define curriculum through its historical, social, philosophical, and political position. It demonstrates how the development of a curriculum can be as easily influenced by the current economic globalization of our markets, as to the demographic of the community inhabitants to which it is being taught. This class humanizes education and brings to light its treaties and conflicts within humanity and ethical choice. CEP-820 Teaching Students Online - Dr. Anne Heintz Where will education be in 10 years? Will the idea of a traditional classroom be that of a memory? Will online learning completely rethink how we view the concept of academia? What will education look like? These are all questions asked in Teaching Students Online. This course looks at the past, present, and future of web based education and asks the question of “how does your teaching fit in with emerging educational technologies?” This class has allowed me to look at outdoor education and technological development within the same context, and devise online/hybrid learning opportunities for my students. It demonstrates online learning as an individual tool that can be catered to fit your personal academic situation or curriculum needs. Regardless of the subject matter or institution construct, web based learning tools can be catered to fit a wide range of learning needs. CEP-807 Capstone Portfolio Course - Dr. Matthew Koehler The culmination of an educational journey; the Capstone Portfolio Course highlights the components of my Master’s Degree in Education from Michigan State University. This course provides you with the tools to develop an online compendium, nay, an online identity for which to use throughout your future educational and professional endeavors. By providing you with the knowledge and freedom to construct a web based presence, the Capstone Portfolio Course assists you in building a gallery for which you can display your accomplishments and hard work to the world. |
